In my last trip to Germany and Austria ,I visited Königssee as a day trip. I stayed in Salzburg and take Bus 840 to Berchtesgaden, bus depart every hour and journey on bus is around 45 mins and take you to Berchtesgaden hbf from Salzburg Hbf. Bavaria ticket is valid on this border crossing bus and is recommended since it also cover the bus from Berchtesgaden to Königssee. Bus to Königssee from Berchtesgaden takes 15 mins or so depart every hour. Which if the bus from Salzburg in time, the connection would be perfect. Königssee is filled with tourist (not according to HK stamdard of course) but it is considered packed compared to other tourist spots. Boat trip is reasonable priced and is recommended to go all the way to Obersee Which is another lake . There are several restaurants in each stopovers and I would recommend you to try the restaurant near obersee , better view and less crowded. There’s a farm house selling local milk products in Obersee, it takes around 100 mins round trip from the Obersee pier. The Scene is absolutely stunning and rewarding as shown in the photo here. I am sure I saw this scene on some commercials although I forgot which one. It is important to catch the last boat trip back to the carpark/ bus stop. Miss it and you need to stay overnight: bad news is if you catch the last boat trip to car park, you will probably miss the last bus back to Berchtesgaden HBF. I myself missed the last bus back to Berchtesgaden Hbf but luckily I catch a taxi, cost me 15€. If you miss the last bus to salzburg ( which depart before evening) you can take train to Freilassing then to Salzburg, take you 100 mins or so, but last train depart at dinner time, and yay, it is covered by BayernTicket .
There are more then Königssee in Berchtesgaden, if you want to visit Eagle Nest , the cable car etc, better stay there then in Salzburg (or worse Munich)
