Many banks in England started from a small local business. In the past, most transactions are paid in cash and there's a need for safekeeping.
Many town folks started to give their money to reputable merchants for safekeeping, which started to transform into a bank.
These small banks started to merged with each other, for Wisbech & Lincolnshire Bank, it later forms Barclays Bank, one of the largest bank in UK.
One of the interesting thing about note issuing in Brits: There used to be many note issuing banks, but starting from 1844, no new bank can issue banknotes in England, the bank that used to issues notes can continue to do so.
